In July 2024, Northwest Mothers Milk Bank welcomed Mother’s Milk Bank of Montana into our family. NWMMB plans to begin revitalizing nonprofit milk banking in the state of Montana. We could use your help! Meet NWMMB Established in 2008, Northwest Mothers Milk Bank’s (NWMMB) mission is to improve the health and survival of vulnerable infants. We believe that every baby deserves access to human milk. As a member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) , we have been closely aligned with our neighboring milk banks by helping each other to meet the demand for donor human milk. This includes our friends at Mother’s Milk Bank of Montana. In the Spring, we began to assist with screening milk donors, safely pasteurizing milk, and dispensing milk to hospitals and outpatients in the state of Montana. Milk For Montana In July 2024, we made this transition official and welcomed Mother’s Milk Bank of Montana into our family. NWMMB plans to begin revitalizing nonprofit milk banking in the state of Montana. We could use your help! Our immediate goals are to: Grow awareness about human milk banking and the opportunity for milk donation to help Montana babies to grow and thrive. Develop Milk Drop locations throughout the state. Milk Drops make it easier for generous milk donors to drop off their milk. Interested in hosting a Milk Drop site? • Host a Milk Distribution Site | NWMMB

Hospitals and clinics can expand their partnership with Northwest Mothers Milk Bank by hosting a Donor Milk Distribution Site. Host a Milk Distribution Site Hospitals and clinics can expand their partnership with Northwest Mothers Milk Bank by hosting a Donor Milk Distribution Site. A Northwest Mothers Milk Bank Distribution Site enables families to fill their donor human milk prescription right there at the hospital, eliminating the added cost of travel to or overnight shipping from Northwest Mothers Milk Bank in Tigard, OR. A Donor Milk Distribution Site plays a vital role in the community by providing convenient access to safe, pasteurized donor milk on the day of hospital discharge. Outpatient families who do not live in direct proximity to Northwest Mothers Milk Bank incur costly fees and delayed access to donor milk because it must be shipped overnight from our facility. When mother’s own milk is not yet available, the precious calories and nutrients only human milk can provide are vital to the health and growth of a newborn infant in the first days of life. This program entails a mutual partnership between NWMMB and a healthcare facility to meet the need for safe, pasteurized donor human milk in Pacific Northwest communities. The Distribution Site adheres to NWMMB storage and distribution policies that comply with those set forth by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) . If your hospital clinic or pharmacy would like to learn more about becoming a Donor Milk Distribution Site , please contact joanne@nmwmmb.org Are you a medical professional seeking donor milk for a hospital? Milk Banking Milk Banking | Milk Drop Locations | Milk Distribution Sites | Expression of Care | Evie's Fund | Abi's Fund Northwest Mothers Milk Bank is proud to be the only nonprofit human milk bank in the Pacific Northwest. The unprecedented community support we receive allows us to grow and expand our services every year! Donate Milk Safety & Quality For Healthcare Providers For Hospitals High breastfeeding rates and a positive breastfeeding culture are essential foundations for a thriving community milk bank. Breastfeeding rates in the Pacific Northwest are among the highest in the nation. Area health care professionals and families know that human milk is proven to provide the essential nutrients and immunological protection necessary for optimal growth and improved long-term health. Promotion and support of breastfeeding is a matter of public health and is a cornerstone of the work we do. Becoming a milk donor gives parents with excess breastmilk the opportunity to make a significant difference by helping another infant receive the best start in life. Our primary focus is on providing milk to vulnerable populations. One in eight infants in the Pacific Northwest is born premature. Prematurity puts an infant at risk for life-threatening infections, prolonged hospital admission, and lifelong disabilities. NWMMB prioritizes these fragile infants, providing a safe source of human milk when their mother’s own milk may not be 100% available. Evidence-based research shows the use of human donor milk from an accredited milk bank should be the standard of care for supplementation of hospitalized premature and ill newborns. This is particularly the case for those in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Thanks to the overwhelming kindness of our milk donors, we have expanded our reach to Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and beyond, providing the best nutrition to infants both in the hospital and after discharging home . Northwest Mothers Milk Bank is proud to be an accredited member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). HMBANA’s mission is to advance the field of nonprofit milk banking through member accreditation, development of evidence-based best practices, and advocacy of breastfeeding and human lactation to ensure an ethically sourced and equitably distributed supply of donor human milk. NWMMB follows their strict standards to ensure the safety of donated milk through careful screening, laboratory testing, and pasteurization techniques. NWMMB has served many families who have infants with complex medical conditions. We work to improve access to a safe source of donor milk when a baby needs it the most. Who is eligible for Milk for Critical Need? Reasons for medically indicated use of donor milk may include, but are not limited to: Digestive disorders (like malabsorption or short-gut syndrome) Heart or kidney disease Post-surgical recovery Immune or metabolic disorders Growth and weight faltering Waiting for an organ transplant Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (babies withdrawing from substances) Severe formula intolerance (must have tried at least three types, including hypoallergenic formulas) Special circumstances (HIV+ birth parent, maternal cancer, or maternal death) There are some critical medical conditions for which pasteurized donor milk may provide therapeutic benefits for your baby. A list of quotes from our Executive Director and other milk bank members. Quotes “At Northwest Mothers Milk Bank, our volunteers, in partnership with our dedicated and tireless staff, continue to make sure that safe donor milk is available and ready to reach neonatal intensive care units, pediatric units, hospital birth centers, and outpatient families without any delays or disruption in service.” — Lesley Mondeaux, Executive Director “Our organization envisions a world where all babies, particularly the most vulnerable, have access to human milk. Now more than ever, improving the health and survival of infants is of utmost importance.” — Lesley Mondeaux, Executive Director “Northwest Mothers Milk Bank is a milk bank for the community. A place where families can access life-saving human milk for their fragile infant, as well as be supported through their own breastfeeding and parenting journey.” — Joanne Ransom, Clinical Outreach Coordinator “For all infants, especially premature infants, mother’s own milk is always the first choice for feeding, but when mother’s milk is unavailable pasteurized donor human milk is the next best option. Without the generosity of the milk donors in the Pacific Northwest, offering donor milk to outpatients would not be possible.“ — Dr. Stefanie Rogers, Medical Director Back to Media Resources

The program is an extension of our mission to increase access to human milk and improve the health of an underserved population. Expression of Care is a program based on the collaborative work between Northwest Mothers Milk Bank (NWMMB), Coffee Creek Correctional Institution (CCCI) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHS). The program is designed to reduce breastfeeding barriers by providing lactation support, supplying milk collection bags, and offering a reliable milk delivery/shipping service for women who participate in the CCCI Breastfeeding Program. The program also supplies infant caregivers with educational resources about infant feeding and the importance of breastmilk feedings. In 2019, NWMMB received an Immediate Impact grant from the Women’s Foundation of Oregon to implement the program. Meet Brandy & Callen milk donor & recipient "Callen was born at 34 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. Because of severe lung prematurity he had to be on CPAP respiratory support for 9 days and was pretty sick for the first several days. He was given donor milk during the first few days of life until I could produce enough milk for him. I was so relieved to know donor milk would be available if it was needed, and when Callen arrived early and went to the NICU, I didnt have to stress about his nutrition. As a NICU nurse I see and know the value of donor milk in our infant population so that was really important to me. Once my milk supply was well established and it was apparent I had an excess, I also chose to become a donor. It was such a blessing to me to be able to give back and help other families." — Brandy, milk donor & recipient

Meet Maclean milk recipient "Maclean Armand was born a month early. With dad’s adorable nose and mom’s blue eyes, this 6lb 5oz wonder was suddenly here. There were immediate concerns about his health, and it came as a shock that this seemingly perfect, ‘easy’ pregnancy yielded this little guy who needed serious medical attention. With all of the surprise, stress and sleeplessness, my body wasn’t yet producing the nutritious milk Maclean needed. We were supported with donor milk from NWMMB before we even left the hospital. After we left, we became humble, grateful recipients of Evie’s fund at NWMMB. As we shuffled daily from one appointment to the next, up to Maclean’s first two surgeries in May. The care, compassion and concern from the indelible staff here helped us through a part of this journey we never could have anticipated." — Maclean's parents, milk recipients

  • | NWMMB

Meet Carrie, Hazel & Alexandria milk donor & recipient "I was so grateful to have received donor milk for my babies. As I read more about the benefits of breastmilk I only became more thankful. I had already determined to do something for NWMMB to express my appreciation and pay it forward, but didn’t think I’d be able to make enough milk for two babies - let alone to have spare to donate. When my own milk did come in, it turned out I did in fact have extra, and lots of it. Every step along the way is a labor of love. After seeing it from both sides I realize that though breast milk is called liquid gold, it’s really liquid love. It felt like another mother was somewhere in the background giving her love to my babies when they received donor milk. Now that I’ve been fortunate enough to give, I feel like I’m doing a little part to care for another baby." — Carrie, milk donor & recipient

  • | NWMMB

Meet Jacqui & Noelle milk donor & recipient “I was so grateful that there was a woman out there that donated her milk. It felt like there was another woman watching out for my baby girl.” — Jaqui, milk donor & recipient
