At Northwest Mothers Milk Bank, our team is critical to our success. We seek energetic and passionate people to join our staff! We provide a unique opportunity to be a part of a growing nonprofit organization that impacts the health of infants in the Pacific Northwest. Equity & Inclusion Welcome to our community. We consider milk donors, donor milk recipients, their families, healthcare providers and institutions, volunteers, and YOU to be part of our community. We all agree that every infant deserves access to human milk for the very best start to life. We are dedicated to serving all infants and families within our community whatever their race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, sexual orientation or identity, age, education, religion, disability or socioeconomic status. The events of 2020 spotlighted existing disparities in maternal healthcare, particularly for people of color. Statistics show that birthing people in BIPOC communities face higher mortality rates and have less access to breast/chestfeeding education than their white neighbors, in no small part due to the injurious history of injustice and poor healthcare outcomes for people of color. Prematurity puts infants at risk for experiencing poor health outcomes. While premature birth can strike anyone, babies born to BIPOC families are 40% more likely to be born too early. We prioritize fragile infants, providing a safe source of human milk when their mother’s own milk may not be 100% available. Lactation and human milk feeding are the cornerstone of human milk banking. This begins with the support, protection, and promotion of breast/chestfeeding. Working as an allied health partner in maternal-child health we have long seen the disparities in opportunities and outcomes along racial lines. Our board and staff are committed to actively examine the inequities that exist within the field of human milk banking. Click on the icons below to learn more about the steps we have taken, and continue to take. Educate Educating ourselves about racism . Examine Examining systems that play a role in perpetuating inequity . Identify Identifying barriers to breastfeeding and human donor milk access. Strengthen Strengthening our community relationships. Advocate Advocating for all babies' right to human milk. Most importantly, we will work more effectively and collaboratively to ensure that donor milk is reaching the babies in our community that need it the most. This work is urgent, and we will always be learning. We will make mistakes and own our responsibility for corrective action. Our efforts will be tireless, and we will not stop. Our journey is on-going. Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. — Martin Luther King, Jr.

COVID-19 The safety and wellbeing of our employees, volunteers, donors, and outpatient families is our priority. We will continue to update this page with our latest Covid-19 information, statements, and guidelines. Milk donors who receive the Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccines are still safe and permitted to donate their milk without a deferral period. Covid-19 and Human Milk The safety of the babies we serve is essential! We understand that you may have concerns about your infant’s safety, as well as, your ability to donate milk during the Covid-19 pandemic. If you have symptoms of Covid-19, test positive, or have had a positive known exposure, please call Northwest Mothers Milk Bank to discuss any possible temporary deferral periods and medication use. In most cases, it is safe to donate milk that is expressed during your illness. Some medications used to treat your symptoms may have a short deferral period. We are happy to answer all your questions - 800-204-4444 . Because Northwest Mothers Milk bank provides an important and essential service for the families and infants of the Pacific Northwest, we continue to operate during the period of mandated Covid-19 restrictions. However, we have enhanced the procedures already in place to provide a greater level of protection for our milk recipients, donated milk, milk donors, volunteers, and staff. There is no evidence that Covid-19 is transmitted through human milk. Please visit the CDC website and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Statement on Breastfeeding and Coronavirus 2019 . However, antibodies to the coronavirus do transfer into breastmilk, which can provide protection to babies. Coronaviruses that are closely related to the strain that causes Covid-19 are readily killed during Holder Pasteurization, which is the process used to pasteurize donor human milk. The CDC recommends that breastfeeding mothers who test positive for Covid-19 continue to breastfeed or pump milk for their child. Milk donors who receive the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna Covid-19 vaccines and boosters are safe and permitted to donate their milk without a deferral period. Covid-19 Safety Precautions Precautions are always a part of what we do each day to ensure the safety of our milk, but they are especially important during the Covid-19 pandemic. Donors are thoroughly screened for travel, household health, and risk factors for Covid-19. Donor milk is pasteurized to kill any bacteria and viruses present in the milk. Research has shown that Covid-19 is killed during Holder pasteurization. After pasteurization, milk is tested by a third-party laboratory to ensure it is free of bacteria. NWMMB’s processing rooms are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized multiple times each day. Our team follows guidelines from the FDA and the Human Milk Banking Association of North America to assure optimal practice and safety.   Check out our video interview with Fox12 News regarding milk donation options during Covid-19.

There is an ongoing need for milk donors and milk donations across the US and Canada. Donor Milk Saves Lives Ongoing milk donations are greatly needed. There is high demand for pasteurized breastmilk in the Pacific Northwest. Currently, one in nine babies is born premature, putting them at risk for life-threatening infections, prolonged hospital admission, and lifelong disabilities. Evidence-based research shows that the use of human donor milk from an accredited milk bank should be the standard of care for the supplementation of hospitalized premature and ill newborns. Our goal is to provide life-saving donor milk to every baby in need. Our generous milk donors make our work possible! Donors like Sayari: “My first baby received donated breastmilk, so I wanted to pay it forward. It makes me feel like a part of the community of mothers, where irrespective of our culture, background, religion, ethnicity, we are reminded that at the end we are the same! It is a wonderful feeling to be of help, especially to newborns.” ~ Sayari, Washington milk recipient and donor Are you interested in donating your surplus milk? Milk donors are healthy, lactating individuals. Potential donors go through a comprehensive screening process that includes: A short phone interview. We’ll ask questions about general health, medication/supplement use, and your overall breastfeeding experience. Online completion of medical history, lifestyle questionnaire, and medical consent forms. With permission, Northwest Mothers Milk Bank contacts the potential donor’s healthcare providers. We confirm donor health history and baby’s health. Complete a blood test. We screen for HIV, HTLV, Hepatitis B and C, and Syphilis. The milk bank coordinates and pays for this test. Our friendly, knowledgeable screening staff are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). They are available to answer questions throughout the entire screening and donation process. There is no cost to become a milk donor. The milk bank does not pay donors for their breastmilk. Due to ethical and safety issues, the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) prohibits compensating milk donors. As a nonprofit organization, this also allows us to keep processing fees as low as possible. Milk donors make a significant impact on the health and well-being of the most vulnerable babies in our communities. Oregon milk donor Sarah shares:   “It’s such a tremendous and important gift! You can give a baby the best possible chance of growing strong by sharing your supply, and give parents so much peace of mind during what’s already an intense and emotional time of transition.” ~ Sarah, Oregon milk donor Call Northwest Mothers Milk Bank at 800-204-4444 or 503-469-0955 to learn if you are eligible to donate milk.

Studies show many important health benefits of breastmilk that extend even further into an infant’s life including resistance to disease and infection, along with prevention of diseases such as juvenile diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and some cancers. When mother's own milk is not available, pasteurized donor human milk is the next best option for infant feeding. Pasteurized donor human milk is heat treated to destroy bacteria and viruses. Many powerful immune factors are retained after pasteurization to protect against infection. Pasteurized Donor Human Milk (PDHM) in the NICU Preterm infants have fragile, underdeveloped gastrointestinal (GI) systems. Human milk reduces the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a dangerous GI condition associated with significant morbidity and mortality. When breastfeeding is unavailable, pasteurized donor human milk protects against NEC. Human milk also reduces the risk of sepsis and decreases the number of healthcare visits after NICU discharge. The American Academy of Pediatrics endorses the use of pasteurized donor human milk for preterm infants when mother's own milk is unavailable. Common reasons for use of PDHM may include: Prematurity Infants susceptible to or recovering from necrotizing enterocolitis Failure to thrive Malabsorption syndrome Short-gut syndrome Renal failure Inborn errors of metabolism Trophic feeds/gut priming Pre- and post-surgical nutrition and immunological support Cardiac problems Immunodeficiency disorders Treatment of infectious diseases (intractable diarrhea, gastroenteritis, infant botulism, sepsis) Non-infectious intestinal disorders Pediatric burn patients Illness requiring temporary interruption of breastfeeding Adoption Allergies or intolerance to cow and soy milk Pneumonia Northwest Mothers Milk Bank, an accredited member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) , prioritizes the most vulnerable patients to receive PDHM by serving more than 70 hospitals in the Pacific Northwest region. Our generous milk donors have assured that we can provide milk to infants outside of the NICU environment, promoting optimum health for infants in mother/baby care units as well as for infants at home when medical indication is present. Donor Milk on the Mother/Baby Care Unit & Post Discharge The use of donor milk on mother/baby units for the healthy term infant population is fast becoming a standard of care. Studies have demonstrated that exclusive breastfeeding rates are higher at discharge when donor milk is available for supplementation. Establishing a donor milk program on the mother baby unit increases parental feeding choices and may improve patient satisfaction. Indications for donor milk on the floor of mother/baby units include, but are not limited to: low supply, poor latch, hypoglycemia, weight loss, and hyperbilirubinemia. Dr Mandy Brown Belfort has published valuable research supporting the use of PDHM in the mother/baby care unit setting Hospital Milk Orders Donor Milk for Outpatients at Home Donor milk may be used at home for a multitude of reasons including short term supplementation in the newborn period, maternal illness or separation, adoption, surrogacy, or low milk supply. Some parents use donor milk to provide a daily dose of antibodies and immune factors to complement baby’s other nutrition. Donor milk may be used in conjunction with mother’s milk or formula. Although insurance companies do not routinely cover donor milk in the outpatient setting, Medicaid coverage is increasing in states around the US. Oregon Health Plan (OHP) covers the cost of PDHM from Northwest Mothers Milk Bank for infants up to 6 months of age (adjusted for gestational age) who meet all the following criteria: Has low birth weight (<1500g) or severe underlying gastrointestinal disease; Continued human donor milk through neonatal hospital discharge for a clear medical indication; Has a persistent outpatient medical need for human donor milk due to ongoing severe concerns with persistent diarrhea or malabsorption, with improvement on breast milk compared to formula; and The mother’s breast milk is not available, appropriate, or sufficient to meet the infant’s needs, despite lactation support for the mother. Outpatient Milk Orders Other Sources of Donor Milk Commercial milk processing companies are jumping into the field as they realize the benefits of human milk. These for-profit companies screen and process their milk differently than a nonprofit milk bank accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). Northwest Mothers Milk Bank uses the evidence-based Holder pasteurization process, (62.5 degrees C for 30 minutes) to ensure the safety and quality of our donor human milk. Commercial milk banks offer financial compensation to milk donors, as opposed to nonprofit HMBANA milk banks, who do not incentivize milk donation due to ethical and safety concerns. Meet Evie In 2014, Evie was the first baby to receive milk from Northwest Mothers Milk Bank as a community donation. In Evie’s honor, a community care fund was established to ensure that the processing fees for donor human milk would not be a barrier for families whose infants have a critical medical need . Evie’s Fund is available to families by application, medical prescription, and medical necessity. Visit our Community Care page for more information and learn how to submit an application for your baby. Graced with an engaging personality and an endearing smile, Evie's little love story began with a serious diagnosis. She was born with no immune system, which put her at risk for serious infections, and spent her first 10 months fighting for her life at Seattle Children’s Hospital. While babies with healthy immune systems safely enjoy the full benefits of unpasteurized breastmilk, pasteurized breastmilk is the safest option for babies with diagnoses like Evie’s NWMMB provided Evie with pasteurized donor human breastmilk every week throughout her hospital stay. Human milk helped to sustain her through many medical complications including lung infections and two bone marrow transplants. Evie’s second transplant was a success, and she is now experiencing life outside hospital walls. At seven years old, she is a serious student with just the right amount of spunk and sass – she is thriving! Evie is just one of many babies who have benefitted from donor human milk. Their stories are the heart of our mission: providing life-saving breastmilk to babies who need it the most. Click here to read more Little Love Stories . Frequently Asked Questions about donating milk, receiving milk, and milk banking. FAQs For Healthcare Providers | For Hospitals | Pump Rentals | Media | In The News | FAQs | Blo g Donating Milk Who donates milk to Northwest Mothers Milk Bank? Our milk donors are some of the most kind-hearted people you will ever meet! They are healthy, non-smoking parents who find themselves with more milk than their own babies need. They donate the excess to improve the health and survival of infants in their community. Approximately 10% of our milk donors donate milk after the loss of an infant . Visit our Donate Milk page to learn more. Who will receive my milk? NWMMB is located in Tigard, OR, and dispenses pasteurized donor human milk to hospitals and families throughout Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and beyond. Why is there a screening process to donate milk? The screening process ensures the safety and wellbeing of both donors and recipients. Before donating milk, milk donors undergo a medical history check, a release from their healthcare provider, and a blood test, at no cost to them. This ensures that donors are healthy and their milk is safe to be pasteurized and distributed. We require a signed release from the infant’s healthcare provider as well when applicable - it is important to be sure the donor’s baby is growing well, and all nutritional requirements are being met. A Notice of Privacy Practices is provided to all who are interested in donating milk. Why do you ask for a minimum donation? NWMMB asks milk donors to commit to donating between 100-150 ounces of milk. As a nonprofit organization, this helps to offset the costs of completing the donor screening process. We do not have a minimum donation amount for donors who are donating after a loss. Receiving Milk Is donor milk safe? Yes, donor milk is safe for infants! Safety and Quality are our priority. Northwest Mothers Milk Bank follows strict screening, processing, and dispensing guidelines established by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) to ensure the safety of donor breastmilk. These guidelines have been established with the advisement of the Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration, and the blood and tissue industries. Potential milk donors provide complete medical and lifestyle histories and undergo blood tests like the screening process used at blood banks. Donated milk is then pasteurized to kill bacteria or viruses that may be present in the milk. Before the pasteurized milk is dispensed, testing is performed by an outside laboratory. Will my baby benefit from receiving donor milk? Human milk is ideal for all babies. Your infant’s healthcare provider or lactation consultant can help you determine if donor milk is needed. Everyone’s feeding experience is different and every baby has unique needs. Often donor milk is needed for a short time period while lactation is being established. How do I get donor milk for my baby? You will need a prescription from your infant’s caregiver. Please visit our Outpatient page and review our Notice of Privacy Practices to learn more and download a prescription form. Where do I go to get donor milk for my baby? NWMMB is committed to increasing access to human milk. Donor milk is available by prescription, either directly from NWMMB or through a Donor Milk Distribution Site . Although NWMMB is located in Tigard, OR, pasteurized donor human milk is shipped to hospitals and families throughout the Pacific Northwest. About Milk Banking Why is donor milk important? Breastmilk is the ideal food for infants. Rich in nutrients and antibodies, breastmilk protects an infant from developing infections, allergies, and long-term health complications. A mother’s own breastmilk is always the best for her baby, but sometimes a mother’s milk is not 100% available. Evidenced-based research shows the use of human donor milk from an accredited milk bank should be the standard of care for supplementation of hospitalized premature and ill newborns, particularly those in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). An exclusive human milk diet for all infants is proven to provide the essential nutrients and immunological protection necessary for optimal growth and improved long-term health.   Is there a need for donor milk? We envision a world where every baby has access to the human milk they need. The demand for donor milk has increased over the past decade. Donated milk is particularly vital for preterm and hospitalized infants with medical need. Why is pasteurization important? Milk that is donated to NWMMB is pasteurized according to the quality and safety standards from the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). Milk is pasteurized using a safe, evidence-based process called Holder pasteurization. The milk is gently heated in a shaking water bath, which kills bacteria and viruses that may be present in the milk while preserving many of its nutritional components. After pasteurization, milk is frozen and tested for Safety and Quality . Do hospitals and outpatients pay a processing fee for human donor milk? Yes, all nonprofit milk banks charge a fee for human donor milk. Revenue from our processing fees help to cover the costs of donor screening, pasteurization, distribution and the provision of community care for infants with medical need . Any surplus revenue is directed back to fulfilling our mission. NWMMB will continue to work tirelessly to advocate for private insurance coverage for human donor milk. What does it mean to be a nonprofit milk bank? NWMMB is proud to be a community-based nonprofit milk bank. We received our 501(c)3 certification in 2009. Our milk donors are true volunteers, making milk donations to improve the health and survival of vulnerable babies. For-profit milk banks do exist. They are privately owned by individuals and are aimed at increasing profits for their owners. We rely on our amazing milk donors, volunteers, tireless staff, healthcare partners, community foundations, passionate board directors and financial supporters to sustain our community milk bank. Milk expressed either by hand or with the help of a pump can be refrigerated, then stored in the freezer until donation. Expressing your milk can occur for as long as you want and may be donated in honor of your baby. Any amount of breastmilk will be accepted for donation. Suppressing Your Milk If you prefer to stop your milk production, there are safe ways to do so. Some helpful tips: Don’t bind your breasts. Binding may cause plugged ducts and infection. Cabbage leaf compresses are an easy home remedy proven to reduce engorgement and dry up milk supply. Don’t be afraid to relieve discomfort by expressing some milk. Express just enough to soften your breasts, but not enough to empty them completely. If you have additional questions about suppressing, expressing, storing, or donating your milk, contact your lactation consultant or Northwest Mothers Milk Bank. Useful Links Return to Zero: H.O.P.E. • Milk to Go FAQs | NWMMB

Frequently Asked Questions about donating milk, receiving milk, and milk banking. Milk To Go FAQs Is donor milk safe for my baby? Yes! Donor milk from Northwest Mothers Milk Bank is very safe.Hospitals across the Pacific Northwest and Mountain West region usepasteurized donor milk from NWMMB. We follow strict screening and processing guidelines set by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). These standards are based on guidance from the CDC, FDA, and the blood and tissue industries. Here’s how we make sure milk is safe: Donors complete detailed medical and lifestyle histories All donors are blood tested for viruses that can be passed through milk Milk is gently pasteurized to kill any harmful bacteria or viruses Every batch is tested by an independent lab before it's given to babies We take every step possible to ensure safety and quality. Learn more about our safety process here. Will my baby benefit from receiving donor milk? Yes, human milk is the best nutrition for all babies—especially in the early days. Donor milk can be especially helpful during the time when your own milk supply is being established. For some babies with critical medical needs donor milk can make a big difference in their health outcomes. Talk with your baby’s healthcare provider or lactation consultant to see if donor milk is right for your situation. Every baby’s needs are different, and donor milk is often used as a short-term support. Why is there a limit on the amount of donor milk available to my baby? We know how important it is to make sure your baby gets the best possible start, and we’re here to support you. Donor milk is a precious gift from generous parents in our community who’ve chosen to help others. While we work hard to encourage milk donation, it’s not an unlimited resource. Because of this, we prioritize babies in hospitals and those who are critically ill—where donor milk can be life-saving. Donor milk is typically intended for short-term use. Think of it as a bridge—something to help you meet your baby’s needs now while you work toward your long-term feeding plan. We're here to help support you during that transition. How do I get donor milk for my baby? You’ll need a prescription from your baby’s healthcare provider (and possibly some additional documentation). Visit our Outpatient Program page to see which program fits your needs and what is required from your healthcare provider. Make sure to review our Notice of Privacy Practices as well. Where do I go to get donor milk? Pasteurized donor human milk is available: Directly from Northwest Mothers Milk Bank in Tigard, Oregon. Donor milk can be picked up locally or shipped to families throughout the Pacific Northwest. From one of our Donor Milk Distribution Sites Our mission is to make access to donor milk easier for every family who needs it. Why is there a cost for donor milk? While donated milk is given freely by generous parents, making it safe for babies requires many important steps. The processing fee helps cover: Donor screening and lab testing Pasteurization and safety checks Staffing, equipment, and community outreach Every ounce of milk goes through careful handling to ensure it’s safe and ready for your baby. Will my health insurance cover donor milk? Most insurance providers do not currently cover donor milk for outpatient babies, though there are some exceptions. NWMMB does not bill third-party insurers, but we can help you gather the paperwork you will need if you choose to submit a claim. However: Some babies have critical medical needs that meet insurance guidelines for receiving donor milk. A call to your insurance benefit helpline can provide that information. You may be able to use an FSA (Flexible Spending Account) or HSA (Health Savings Account) to purchase for donor milk You can submit a claim to your insurance for possible reimbursement The billing code (HCPC) for pasteurized donor human milk is T2101 Does NWMMB offer financial assistance? Yes. We want every baby to have access to the milk they need. If the cost is a barrier, please call us at (800) 204-4444—we’ll help you apply to the Community Care program that best fits your situation. For families facing serious medical or financial challenges, Evie’s Fund may be able to help. Call us at (503) 469-0955 or toll-free at (800) 204-4444 to learn more and apply. Donor milk helped my family—how can I pay it forward? We’re so glad donor milk made a difference for your baby. One of the most powerful ways to give back is by sharing your story—your voice can inspire future milk donors and raise awareness about the importance of nonprofit milk banking. If you're able to donate milk, we’d love to hear from you. Many of our amazing donors once received milk themselves and choose to give back when they can. You can also support families by making a financial donation. Every gift helps us provide donor milk to babies in need through our Community Care programs. Together, we can make sure more babies get the healthy start they deserve. Need to order milk for your baby? Outpatient Milk Orders

  • Board-Staff Story | NWMMB

Since joining the board in September of 2019, NWMMB has benefited from Steve Peterson’s expertise as a retired medical engineer with a background in product development planning and business strategy. He and our processing team coordinator, Paige Mattos, put their heads together to identify opportunities for improvement in our processing lab.  A Dynamic Duo Since joining the board in September of 2019, NWMMB has benefited from Steve Peterson’s expertise as a retired medical engineer with a background in product development planning and business strategy. He and our processing team coordinator, Paige Mattos, put their heads together to identify opportunities for improvement in our processing lab. Together, this dynamic duo is improving workflows within our milk processing space. Steve and Paige first set out to create lightweight, stainless steel pasteurization baskets and lids. These custom-designed baskets contain a consistent number of bottles and fit snugly in our pasteurizers but allow water to flow freely throughout the machine. Our staff can easily fill the baskets, insert and remove them from the shaking water baths and move them to the chillers with very little interruption in time or risk of undue strain. “Steve’s pasteurization basket design has helped tremendously. Prior to the manufacturing of these baskets, we were handling up to 100 bottles individually in and out of the water baths. Steve’s baskets have eliminated this tedious process entirely!” -Paige Next, Steve and Paige set their sights on the pasteurizers themselves. Running six pasteurizers simultaneously requires a watchful eye, and maintaining water temperature is critical. Installation of a wireless LAN logger system and large monitor display has been a game changer for our milk processing staff. They can easily visualize water and milk temperature changes and respond accordingly. Steve also improved the system for emptying and draining our pasteurizers. “Collaborating with Steve has been such a bright spot on what otherwise was a rather challenging year for everyone. I admire his commitment to learning about the different aspects of milk banking and his willingness to expand his perspective on why human milk is so important.” -Paige Our hard-working milk processing staff pasteurizes approximately 13,000 ounces per week. They are grateful for a champion like Steve who is interested in improving workflow efficiencies and eliminating safety hazards, all while sharing their goal of bringing more human donor milk to Northwest babies. Community Care We believe that every baby deserves the best possible start in life and that receiving nutrition from human milk is critically important. We take our role in improving the health and survival of infants very seriously. In 2014, a community care program was established, named Evie's Fund , to help to cover the costs of donor human milk for families who can't otherwise afford it. Donor human milk is a limited resource. The demand for a safe source of donor milk continues to rise. Our supply of donor milk is dependent on the milk donations we receive from our generous milk donors. Our priority is serving the most fragile and vulnerable hospitalized infants in the Pacific Northwest first. Once the needs of hospitalized infants are met, we are able to serve babies who have been discharged home but continue to have medical needs. A processing fee is charged for each ounce of milk dispensed to hospitals and families in the community. These fees allow us to ensure that the donated milk we receive is safe, gently pasteurized and free of virus and bacteria. In order to provide donor milk at reduced or no cost, we seek funding through private donations, fundraising events and foundation support. Every dollar donated to Evie's Fund supports giving back to families in our community. Infants receive milk through Evie's Fund for a variety of diagnoses every year. Some of the diagnoses include, but are not limited to; prematurity, failure to thrive, maternal cancer, post-surgical conditions, severe formula intolerance, and complicated genetic disorders. From the moment a potential milk donor contacts our donor screening team until a bottle of pasteurized donor milk departs the milk bank for its final destination, we adhere to strict protocols to protect the safety and quality of the amazing milk donated to us by our generous donors. We are not alone! We are accredited members of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) , a network of nonprofit milk banks across the US and Canada. All HMBANA milk banks follow a strict set of “Guidelines for Human Milk Banking” to assure safety. We comply with and often exceed all measures set forth by HMBANA, which follow standards set forth by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and World Health Organization (WHO) . Follow the Milk below to see how we embrace safety and quality with each step. A verbal phone screening and a written questionnaire lets us get to know our donors well. They understand the important role their milk will play in a fragile infant’s health. Medical consent from healthcare providers confirms the donor's good health (and the health of their infant(s) if applicable). Serological testing for HIV 1/2, HTLV 1/2, Syphilis, & Hepatitis B & C by a CLIA Certified Laboratory further ensures the safety of our donors and their milk. Notice of Privacy Practices provided to all potential milk donors. Donor Qualification and Screening Individual containers of milk received are carefully handled and examined for quality and integrity. Each milk donation is logged into a secure electronic tracking system. Each deposit of milk is assigned its own unique identifier which follows it through its entire milk bank journey. Milk containers are safely stored in a freezer system at -18 degrees C until selected for processing. Milk Receiving Milk is thawed carefully and slowly under safe refrigerated temperatures until pourable. Temperatures are closely monitored and maintained throughout each processing step. Milk purity is achieved by carefully pouring thawed milk through a sanitized, food-safe strainer. Milk from multiple donors is combined together to achieve balanced and consistent nutrient levels. Milk is dispensed into heat-sanitized bottles that are safe for heating and freezing of milk. Both measured glass and BPA-free plastic bottles are used and considered optimum for infant feeding preparation. Milk Thawing, Pooling, and Processing Milk is treated by Holder pasteurization which warms milk rapidly, holds it at 62.5 degrees C for 30 minutes, then rapidly cools it to 4 Degrees C. This method kills bacteria and viruses but preserves important biological factors unique to human milk. Research shows that Holder pasteurization provides the optimum heat treatment to assure milk safety and protect the unique proteins and biologic factors that newborns need. Each bottled is labeled with nutritional information and a barcode that contains the milk’s unique identifiers. Heat Treatment Nutritional analysis is performed on each milk pool using full spectrum laser spectroscopy technology. Macronutrient testing is validated using reference methods approved by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. Milk containing a higher fat and protein count is reserved for high-risk infants in the NICU. Careful and stringent quality checks are carried out for each batch of pasteurized milk. Each batch of milk undergoes quantitative bacterial analysis by a CLIA Certified Laboratory. Testing for Safety and Quality Once pasteurized, the milk remains deeply frozen at -20 degrees C while awaiting results of batch testing. Freezers are electronically monitored to assure optimal temperature ranges are maintained. Preventive controls, quality assurance checks, and accurate record keeping are verified to qualify milk for dispensation. Milk approved and ready for release is moved to dedicated freezers before orders are fulfilled and milk is dispensed. Milk Approval and Release Milk orders, either for hospitals or outpatients, are packed quickly into insulated containers or coolers. Dry ice is used to keep milk deeply frozen during transport. Temperature indicators and Cold Chain Verifications are included in all shipments to hospitals and outpatients handled by third-party carriers. • Mothers' Milk of Montana | NWMMB

In July 2024, Northwest Mothers Milk Bank welcomed Mother’s Milk Bank of Montana into our family. NWMMB plans to begin revitalizing nonprofit milk banking in the state of Montana. We could use your help! Meet NWMMB Established in 2008, Northwest Mothers Milk Bank’s (NWMMB) mission is to improve the health and survival of vulnerable infants. We believe that every baby deserves access to human milk. As a member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) , we have been closely aligned with our neighboring milk banks by helping each other to meet the demand for donor human milk. This includes our friends at Mother’s Milk Bank of Montana. In the Spring, we began to assist with screening milk donors, safely pasteurizing milk, and dispensing milk to hospitals and outpatients in the state of Montana. Milk For Montana In July 2024, we made this transition official and welcomed Mother’s Milk Bank of Montana into our family. NWMMB plans to begin revitalizing nonprofit milk banking in the state of Montana. We could use your help! Our immediate goals are to: Grow awareness about human milk banking and the opportunity for milk donation to help Montana babies to grow and thrive. Develop Milk Drop locations throughout the state. Milk Drops make it easier for generous milk donors to drop off their milk. Interested in hosting a Milk Drop site? • Host a Milk Distribution Site | NWMMB

Hospitals and clinics can expand their partnership with Northwest Mothers Milk Bank by hosting a Donor Milk Distribution Site. Host a Milk Distribution Site Hospitals and clinics can expand their partnership with Northwest Mothers Milk Bank by hosting a Donor Milk Distribution Site. A Northwest Mothers Milk Bank Distribution Site enables families to fill their donor human milk prescription right there at the hospital, eliminating the added cost of travel to or overnight shipping from Northwest Mothers Milk Bank in Tigard, OR. A Donor Milk Distribution Site plays a vital role in the community by providing convenient access to safe, pasteurized donor milk on the day of hospital discharge. Outpatient families who do not live in direct proximity to Northwest Mothers Milk Bank incur costly fees and delayed access to donor milk because it must be shipped overnight from our facility. When mother’s own milk is not yet available, the precious calories and nutrients only human milk can provide are vital to the health and growth of a newborn infant in the first days of life. This program entails a mutual partnership between NWMMB and a healthcare facility to meet the need for safe, pasteurized donor human milk in Pacific Northwest communities. The Distribution Site adheres to NWMMB storage and distribution policies that comply with those set forth by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) . If your hospital clinic or pharmacy would like to learn more about becoming a Donor Milk Distribution Site , please contact joanne@nmwmmb.org Are you a medical professional seeking donor milk for a hospital? Northwest Mothers Milk Bank is proud to be the only nonprofit human milk bank in the Pacific Northwest. The unprecedented community support we receive allows us to grow and expand our services every year! Donate Milk Safety & Quality For Healthcare Providers For Hospitals High breastfeeding rates and a positive breastfeeding culture are essential foundations for a thriving community milk bank. Breastfeeding rates in the Pacific Northwest are among the highest in the nation. Area health care professionals and families know that human milk is proven to provide the essential nutrients and immunological protection necessary for optimal growth and improved long-term health. Promotion and support of breastfeeding is a matter of public health and is a cornerstone of the work we do. Becoming a milk donor gives parents with excess breastmilk the opportunity to make a significant difference by helping another infant receive the best start in life. Our primary focus is on providing milk to vulnerable populations. One in eight infants in the Pacific Northwest is born premature. Prematurity puts an infant at risk for life-threatening infections, prolonged hospital admission, and lifelong disabilities. NWMMB prioritizes these fragile infants, providing a safe source of human milk when their mother’s own milk may not be 100% available. Evidence-based research shows the use of human donor milk from an accredited milk bank should be the standard of care for supplementation of hospitalized premature and ill newborns. This is particularly the case for those in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Thanks to the overwhelming kindness of our milk donors, we have expanded our reach to Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and beyond, providing the best nutrition to infants both in the hospital and after discharging home . Northwest Mothers Milk Bank is proud to be an accredited member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). HMBANA’s mission is to advance the field of nonprofit milk banking through member accreditation, development of evidence-based best practices, and advocacy of breastfeeding and human lactation to ensure an ethically sourced and equitably distributed supply of donor human milk. NWMMB follows their strict standards to ensure the safety of donated milk through careful screening, laboratory testing, and pasteurization techniques.
